The workshop is an introduction to Game Therapy. No prior clinical experience with children or Game Therapy is required.

You will develop skills as a game therapist with a combination of instruction, video demonstrations and hands-on training. The workshop will introduce the underlying cognitive–behavioral principles, guidelines in using games and the learning objectives for each of 10 games. Several videos will be shown illustrating specific intervention skills in therapeutic settings.  You will then hone your skills by role playing the games in small groups. Dr. Berg will move among groups assuming the role of therapist or child to illustrate various skills. Group members will then take turns practicing the role of therapist and receiving feedback from Dr. Berg and other group members. Reconvening as a large group, participants will share their insights and address questions related to the role play experience.

Learning Objectives

You will learn to:

  • Select the game (s) that best fits the presenting problem

  • Select the game cards most appropriate for the child

  • Model good responses to game cards

  • Model the thinking processes associated with problem solving

  • Coach the child to give a better response to a game card

  • Ask therapeutically useful questions

  • Use objective measures to assess treatment progress and outcome

  • Create a take-home version of your game (s) that parents can use with their children

  • Develop an original game for personal use and/or publication

Game Selection

Experience with Dr. Berg’s games prior to the workshop will enrich your workshop experience. Three games of your choice are included with tuition. Select any two games, mailed by Western Psychological Services, when you register for the workshop. You may make your selection from among the 10 games reviewed in the workshop. Go to Game Catalog for a description of the games.
